“If we play at the level that we know we can play at, I´m sure we can
catch up with Barcelona”. These are Beckhams thoughts for 2005. And he gave them, in Spanish, in front of the cameras
of Realmadrid Televisión. The Englishman completed his first interview in our language, though he used his native language
when he had to: “After Christmas everything will get better". Speaking about his time in Spain: “My family is
happy in this country". And he sent a seasonal message: "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone, and especially,
to all the Madrid fans!".
Catching up with Barcelona is the first priority.
-Yes,
we can still do it. The only thing we have to do is to go out and win game after game. No-one should have any doubts: we have
the team to do it, because on the team we have the best players in the world. We can catch up with them, but to do it we have
to play as we know we can. The important thing is to play good football; if we play at the level we know we can play at, I´m
sure we will catch up with them.
-What do you think is the reason for the inconsistency the team has shown in a few games?
-Sometimes you play
well, and other times you can´t. That´s sport. There are some days you win, and others you lose, but the members of the team
know that this team can play much better than it has at the beginning of the season. I admit that the start of the season
has been difficult, but I´m convinced that after Christmas everything will improve.
-Those are the ups and downs of football.
-They are things that, honestly, I can´t explain. There are games
where we beat our rivals 6-0 and, the next day, we lose 4-0. In this sport it´s very complicated to explain what happens on
certain days. There are times when we lose game which people think should have been easy to win, but it´s not the case. Football
is like that, as is playing for a team like Real Madrid.
-Every year, people say that Real Madrid can win the League, the Champions, and the Copa del Rey. How do you see
it?
-It´s possible. We think we can do it, but last season we said the same and we didn´t win anything, so I´m
not saying anything so as to not to jinx anything. What´s sure is that we are well positions in the Champions, in the League,
and in the Copa del Rey. We have to wait and see what happens, but if we play as we know how to, we can do it.
-What would be your perfect season?
-The perfect season would be one where we win all the titles.
-In the six remaining minutes left to play against Real Sociedad it is possible to win?
-Of course it´s possible.
When I was at Manchester United, I remember winning a European Cup in three minutes. We were going to lose against Bayern
Múnich and we got two goals as the match was ending, so anything is possible.
-And then, the derby against Atlético.
-The derby is an important match for everyone. At Manchester, in London,
in Madrid… Derbys are special, Atlético is a well known club, and we want to win.
-How is your life in Spain going?
-My family is very happy in this country. The only problem is the
paparazzi, most of all for my kids.
-And you Spanish lessons, how are they going?
-My classmates help me a lot, but my teacher doesn´t like their
"help", because they teach me swearwords!
-Do you dare to say anything in Spanish?
-I´m very shy, but I´m going to try: Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year to everyone, and especially, to all the Madrid fans!"
