DAVID BECKHAM was last night caught in a terrifying bomb scare at Real Madrid’s
Bernabeu Stadium.
England skipper Becks and his team-mates fled from the pitch three minutes before the end of their
La Liga clash against Real Sociedad.
A stadium announcer ordered the 75,000 fans inside the ground to evacuate immediately
after Spanish cops issued a security alert in reaction to a received terrorist threat.
The Basque newspaper Gara received
the threat from the separatist terror organisation ETA, warning that a bomb would go off at 9pm Spanish time.
With
just 15 minutes left before the deadline, the players and crowd were all evacuated from the ground.
ETA have recently
resumed their bombing campaign in Spain.
Only last week, six bombs exploded on the outskirts of Madrid, causing traffic
chaos.
And it was only nine months ago that nearly 200 people were killed in an al-Qaeda bombing attack on four trains
in the Spanish capital.
Last night’s scare overshadowed an all-action display by Beckham, who continued his
return to form in style.
But despite his efforts, Madrid were heading for a mere 1-1 draw when the play was stopped.
The Spanish FA may decide to let the result stand — which would put another dent in Madrid’s title charge.
It would mean they trail La Liga leaders Barcelona by 11 POINTS.
Brazilian goal-machine Ronaldo had put Madrid
in front before Sociedad levelled through a stunning effort by Turkey international Nihat Kahveci.
Becks, 29, set
up chances for Ivan Helguera and Raul — and was only denied a goal to cap his high-energy performance by a superb save
from a trademark free-kick.
