ROMA THERAPY FOR BECKS....
DAVID BECKHAM insists he will play through the pain barrier as Real Madrid
battle to stay in the Champions League.
Becks, 29, injured his right foot in a challenge with Villarreal’s Argentine
midfielder Juan Pablo Sorin and had to be substituted on 65 minutes.
The England skipper will be assessed by Real’s doctors today to see
if he can start Wednesday’s crucial clash with Roma.
Madrid will crash out of Europe’s elite competition if they lose in
Rome’s Olympic Stadium.
But Becks is determined not to miss the make-or-break Group B clash, with
survival vital to Real’s season as Barcelona are now NINE points clear at the top of La Liga.
He said: “The foot has actually been causing me pain for a few days
after I hurt it in training. I will have more treatment but I think I should be OK for Wednesday.
I played with the pain today because I thought it would be all right, but
I aggravated it.
“I definitely want to play against Roma because it is such a massive
game for this club and it is so important to get through into the next stage of the Champions League.”
Real boss Mariano Garcia Remon is unwilling to take any chances and will leave
Beckham’s fate in the hands of the club’s medical team.
Remon said: “We don’t know how bad it is yet.”
Argentine players made up almost half of Villarreal’s line-up. So it
was almost impossible for Becks, on the right-wing for the second game running, to avoid any Argie-bargie.
Michael Owen carved out a simple 20th-minute chance for Real — but Ronaldo
dawdled on the ball and lost it. |
